You will not find an Original NOS 904 Porsche Les Leston steering wheel in this condition for sale anywhere Worldwide.

New flawless condition.

  • The engraving on the spokes is in excellent condition and ORIGINAL. The engraving on this steering wheel is chrome-plated over the engraving. (Les Leston replicas are not chrome-plated over the engraving).
  • The varnish on the inner frame of the steering wheel has been newly done because it had some small corrosion spots. You can see the repair of this flawless steering wheel on the pictures below the description.
  • The correct original amber varnish has been replaced on the 3mm wide inner frame diameter.
  • The steering wheel spokes and hub have only been polished.
  • The wooden rim was flawless and did not need any repair.
  • This Les Leston has a unique horn button retainer Patent: You have to turn the horn button top cap which will remove and just push the horn button out of the ring.
    I never saw such a genial patent before on a steering wheel. It prevents damaging the horn button. For example, it is a terrible experience to release any Porsche 356A horn button from standard VDM steering wheels!

This is the last one of two 904 GT original Les Leston steering wheels from my Private Collection.
I sold 1 similar used 904 Les Leston steering wheel through Ebay in 2016.

The Italian company EFFPI that had manufactured wooden steering wheels for 1966 and 1967 Shelby cars declared bankrutpcy at the end of 1967. C. Shelby did not find another alternative and kept the Ford Mustang simulated wood steering wheels for his upwards 1968 cars. The new owner F.I.V. – FABRICA ITALIANA VOLANTI s.p.a. Milano took over the Italian EFFPI company inventory. From the end of 1967, F.I.V. started producing cheaper aftermarket wood steering wheels with the look of the EFFPI “67 Shelby GT 500” for different car models including Fiat, VW, BMW, Innocenti, Maserati and Shelby, using a “GRANT like” adapter and a complicated non-working top horn button assembly which were both riveted on the frame of the steering wheel. Unfortunately due to the bad isolated horn rings and horn button assembly of those F.I.V. aftermarket steering wheels, many cars got electrical shortcuts and some got on fire. Due to many lawsuits F.I.V. had to close the company in 1969. In the 1970′s the F.I.V. Co. inventory had been bought through a Milanese car and car parts dealer.

About 5 years ago I was able to purchase the left-over inventory from this retired car and parts dealer which included a large amount of EFFPI – F.I.V. steering wheels for Shelby cars with different hubs for 66 – 67 and 68 Ford Mustang – some embossed with EFFPI – some with F.I.V – and some were only embossed on the backside with INT. PATENTED (MADE IN ITALY).

This particular steering wheel is one of the many I purchased. I assume that it had been manufactured by the previous EFFPI Co. end of 1967 to fit the new wider steering column of Ford Mustang’s 1968 models. This steering wheel is fitted with the correct original 67 68 69 Ford steering column spline and contact rings. What’s rare is that it has the large stainless lower hub skirt with a diameter of 3,970″ which fits perfectly into the 1968 and 1969 Ford Shelby or Mustang steering column housing.

The steering wheel (see last pictures) has been tested and fits perfectly on a 1968 Ford Shelby steering column.

This steering wheel will fit adjustable tilt steering column on 68 – 69 cars.

The steering wheel itself is in concours flawless condition. I have never seen a nicer wooden rim as on this steering wheel.

Since then those steering wheels (for Shelby 1966 and 67) have extensively increased in value. The FIV Bullitt 68 leather steering wheel shown on some pictures has been sold through my website to a new owner of a 68 Fastback GT 500.

This steering wheel is the rare deeper dished version compared to the 3/4′ lower dished EFFPI. See height difference on last pictures of a NOS new Original EFFPI 67 steering wheel – same as the one sold on December 21-2014.

My steering wheels are GUARANTEED ORIGINAL 1960’s Les Leston.

Reproduction or “fake” Les Leston steering wheels are easy to recognize on the Guilloche machined pattern which is made directly on the aluminum spokes. The Guilloche will only hold a short time.

Original Les Leston steering wheels, after being machined with a Guilloche pattern, were than plated with a light chrome over the surface which makes the Guilloche pattern harder.

Scratches on original Les Leston with Guilloche pattern are difficult to polish because of the chrome plating covering the surface.

The wooden rim of reproduction Les Leston or “Fake” Les Leston steering wheels are different than the original ones and the varnish is different as well.

The varnish of an original Les Leston is dark Amber, same as used in the 1960’s on Riva boats. The varnish of a reproduction or “fake” Les Leston is clear polyurethane varnish.

Only original Les Leston steering wheels have an original special VDM horn contact pin with a length of 57 mm.

Those special long VDM horn contact pins in 57 mm length are unobtainable.

Standard black VDM 356 B/C steering wheels have a VDM horn contact pin with 43.5 mm length.

Original Les Leston that were manufactured to receive an original VDM horn ring have an original VDM steel back side spline plate + a stainless plate of 10 mm height between the steering wheel center frame and top ring where the horn ring is placed into. This is to elevate the horn ring so that the VDM horn ring circle will not touch the spokes when being pushed.

Only original Les Lestons have those elevated 10 mm plates, and therefore a longer horn contact pin.

Original VDM 356 B/C steering wheels do not have an elevated plate placed between the frame of the steering wheel and top metal ring to hold the horn ring.

Original black VDM 356 B/C steering wheels or VDM wood same steering wheels that have a horn ring placed into have all marking on the metal spokes as the horn ring circle is touching those spokes while being pushed down to activate the horn.

Les Leston 356 B/C wood steering wheels that were sold unmounted for “Do It Yourself” were mostly not made professionally.

Most of those steering wheels were fixed with just a aluminum VDM backside spline plate and a top horn button top metal ring to receive the standard Porsche VDM horn button, no problem with that.

If you place a Porsche horn ring on the non-elevated center frame of those dished Les Leston steering wheels , the circle of the horn ring will touch the aluminum spokes and make markings on those.

This steering wheel is in flawless new condition.
