Origin: Private Collection of my passed father who purchased a large amount of those steering wheels from a German Porsche dealer who retired in the 1970’s.

My steering wheels are GUARANTEED ORIGINAL 1960’s Les Leston.

Reproduction or “Fake” Les Leston steering wheels are easy to recognize on the Guilloche machined pattern which is made directly on the aluminum spokes.

The Guilloche will only hold a short time.

Original Les Leston steering wheels, after being machined with a Guilloche pattern, were than plated with a light chrome over the surface which makes the Guilloche pattern harder.

Scratches on original Les Leston with Guilloche pattern are difficult to polish because of the chrome plating covering the surface.

Wooden rim of Reproduction Les Leston or “Fake” Les Leston are different than the original and the varnish is different as well.

the varnish of an original Les Leston is dark Amber, same as used in the 1960’s on Riva Boats. The varnish of a Reproduction or “Fake” Les Leston is clear polyurethane varnish.

Only Original Les Leston steering wheels have an original special VDM horn contact pin with a length of 57 mm.

Those special long VDM horn contact pins in 57 mm length are unobtainable.

Standard Black VDM 356 B/C steering wheels have a VDM horn contact pin with 43.5 mm length.

Original Les Leston that were manufactured to receive an original VDM horn ring have an Original VDM steel back side spline plate + a stainless plate of 10 mm height between the steering wheel center frame and top ring where the horn ring is placed into, this is to elevate the horn ring in order that the VDM horn ring circle will not touch the spokes when being pushed.

Only Original Les Lestons have those elevated 10 mm plates, and therefore a longer horn contact pin.

Original VDM 356 B/C steering wheels do not have an elevated plate placed between the frame of the steering wheel and top metal ring to hold the horn ring.

Original black VDM 356 B/C steering wheels or VDM wood same steering wheels that have a horn ring placed into have all marking on the metal spokes as the horn ring circle is touching those spokes while being pushed down to activate the horn.

Les Leston 356 B/C wood steering wheels that were sold unmounted for “Do It Yourself” were mostly not made professionally.

Most of those steering wheels were fixed with just a aluminum VDM backside spline plate and a top horn button top metal ring to receive the standard Porsche VDM horn button, no problem with that.

if you place a Porsche horn ring on the non elevated center frame of those dished Les Leston steering wheels , the circle of the horn ring will touch the aluminum spokes and make marking on those.
